Tanner Cox (bottom) pulling his opponent over him

By J.A. Reeder
If you meet Tanner Cox on the street you will probably think he is just a normal 12 year kid. Quick to smile, doesn’t like school work, and probably needs to clean his bedroom. Except, Tanner is no ordinary 12 year old kid. When kids his age are getting out of bed, Tanner has already put in a 2 mile morning run. When kids his age are asking where is breakfast, Tanner is lifting weights in the basement of his parents house. Under his loose fitting tee-shirt is a physic that resembles something more like an underwear model than a 12 year old. Why does he push so hard. “To win the Olympics” he replies without thinking.
Tanner recently competed in the USA Kids Freestyle/Greco National Championship held in Orem, Utah. Where the top wrestlers in the country via for a coveted National Championship Title. These kids range from ages 8 to 14 wrestling in three different divisions, bantam 9-10 ,intermediate 11-12, and schoolboy 13-14 years old. Because of the placement of Tanner’s birthday he has to wrestle a division older than his actual age. This alone is a challenge, but Tanner rose to the challenge this year and placed 2nd in the 70 pound Greco championships. Greco is a wrestling style where you can’t touch your opponent anywhere below the waste. It solely utilizes upper body strength. Then he followed it up the next day with a 5th place finish in freestyle. Freestyle you can attack your opponents legs.
It has been a whirl wind of a month for Tanner who recently returned from Indianapolis, Indiana where he wrestled with the Utah National Team at the National Schoolboy Duels. From there, it was a week at Western Regional’s in Pocatello ,Idaho followed by three days a Nationals. It is a grueling schedule, Where if you not mentally and physically prepared it can come apart really fast by the time you compete at Nationals Say’s his Father, Billy Cox. Who was a Nevada State champion wrestler himself . You see a lot of kids come into Nationals who are tired and sometimes banged up, that still seem to battle match after match to win. When asked what separates Tanner from the rest of the kids. Work ethic and his will to win. Tanner wrestles around 150 matches a year traveling as far as Oklahoma and Indiana. Tanner will be going to Fort Herriman Junior High. His parents are Billy and Jodie Cox of Herriman, Utah, The grandson of Al and Joyce Cox, Nephew of Dave and Carol Miller, great grandson of Ken and Dawn Lee.
