LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
I am Luke Papez, Associate Project Manager for LS Power’s transmission projects being developed in Nevada. Great Basin Transmission, LLC, a member of the LS Power Group, is finalizing the development of the Southwest Intertie Project (SWIP), a 500 kilo-volt (kV) transmission line that will traverse Lincoln County. I am writing to correct and clarify the statements reported in the Lincoln County Record’s July 15 story entitled
SWIP Transmission Line Expected to Headquarter in Caliente During Construction. A number of the statements reported in the article are inaccurate.
The July 15 article reported that several individuals met with local representatives in Caliente to discuss planning efforts for the coming construction project. The topics of discussion included, among others, characteristics of the project, the number of jobs, and the anticipated services required during construction. The individuals who lead these discussions in Caliente (William Marti and Bruce Evens) are in no wayaffiliated with Great Basin Transmission or the SWIP project.
Many of the reported statements made by these individuals misrepresented facts about the project. The SWIP transmission line is designed to be a 500 kV alternating current (AC) transmission line. The construction of the SWIP will occur in stages with an estimated 350-400 workers employed at the peak of construction. These workers will be spread out along the entire 235 mile right-of-way from Las Vegas to Ely. There will be several staging areas for the project along the alignment, and a central hub has not been designated. It is unlikely that construction materials will be delivered via railroad. Materials for the project will be trucked into the area. Many of the details regarding construction logistics, construction worker housing, and associated services in local communities are currently being developed and will be finalized once the general contractor has been selected.
The SWIP transmission line will bring benefits and opportunities for economic development to the local community and the region. It is important for anyone looking to invest in the region to understand the facts about the SWIP and other proposed projects. Great Basin Transmission is committed to working with the local community to ensure information about the SWIP is available and accurate.
Sincerely,
Luke C. Papez
Assoc Project Manager
