Cuisine in the Country Held at Buckhorn Ranch
By Dave Maxwell
A unique dining experience occurred in Lincoln County last Saturday, sponsored by the Lincoln Community Action Team (LCAT), in partnership with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, July 17 at the Buckhorn Ranch, just south of Alamo off U.S. Highway 93.
“Cuisine in the Country” is food prepared by elite Las Vegas chefs, right on the farm in a country setting. It offered a taste of simplicity with the meals prepared by Mario Batali’s Molto Vegas staff of 5-star Chefs at The Venetian, using locally grown ingredients fresh from several of the producers in Lincoln County.
Foods featured included pork, lamb, goat, various types of salads using locally grown vegetables, pastries with local fruits, apple cider and a couple of refreshing drinks mixed with a little rum or Vodka.

The event was sold out, with a little over 150 attending. About 60 people took the opportunity to come from the Vegas area to enjoy the evening.
Hayley Gloeckner of the UN Coop Extension service said the Las Vegas people "knew about the wonderful chefs at The Venetian, and they wanted to come up and enjoy the cuisine and the country experience with a meal from a 5-star restaurant, and we wanted to show the Vegas people what we have out here in the country.”
Each of the tables for the dinner had a different theme displayed on them. There was one for railroads, all the state parks, local theatre arts, cake decorating, photography, and others.
URN Extension agent, Heidi Gatzke said she was delighted with the response of those who came and had the chance to meet the people who grow the produce, learn about their growing methods and explore a working ranch.
Chefs from The Venetian involved in preparing the meal included Zach Allen, Culinary Director, Doug Taylor, Executive Pastry Chef, and Chef’s assistant Heather Neve, all with B&B Hospitality Group; Jason Neve, Chef di Cucina, and Matt Harubin, Sous Chef, from B&B Ristorante; and Nicole Brisson, Chef di Cucina, with Carnevino Italian Steakhouse.
Chef Allen said it was a fantastic event to have “all the product, lamb and goat, chickens from just down the road, and whatever we pull out of the vegetable gardens here. It’s just fantastic, it can’t be better.”
Dennis and Roxanne Eckholm of Henderson, said they had never been to Alamo before and got an email from some friends informing them of the event and all came up together. We’re just enjoying Alamo,” Roxanne said. “We enjoyed the drive, and we’re really enjoying ourselves.”
One person said he watched the program Iron Chef America on the Food Network, featuring Mario Batali, and wanted to come up because the event was being prepared by members of his staff, and ordered tickets right away. One man said he came because his wife signed him up, but he was glad to have come. A group of master gardeners from Las Vegas also came up. One said, “The food is awesome and the area is nice. A great variety of food.”
Rocky Cordero from Las Vegas came with a few friends, and said he had never been here before. “I’m a Mario Batali guy. I like his cooking. I’m Italian, northern Italian, too. You’re knockin’ on the old heart here. My wife and I grew up in a Cloverdale, California, a small town in northern California wine country.”
Many people said they would be looking forward to the event happening again next summer.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by singer Elwin Robinson and cowboy poet Mike Prince.
