Pioneer Day in Panaca

By Dave Maxwell

Wake up to the sound of big booms and bells ringing this Saturday at 6 a.m. as the opening for the annual Pioneer Day celebration in Panaca.

Event committee member person Leon Poteet, “it’s a tradition as far back as I can remember, and has usually been dynamite.” But, this year, he said, they asked the Pioche Fire Department to substitute dynamite with noise bombs, and be done by a person trained and authorized in pyrotechnics. The site will be on Chalk Hill, right behind the high school football field.

Pioneer Day is in keeping with a celebration by many LDS communities to mark the arrival of the Mormon pioneers, under Brigham Young, into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.  Poteet said in Panaca, they have their celebration on a weekend closest to that date.

He said he thinks the people of Panaca have been holding the annual observance, probably from the time the community was established by Mormon families in 1864, and continued regularly, even during the great Depression and World War II. “They have always celebrated in some form or another, to some degree.” Poteet said.

The movie “Legacy” will be shown in the cultural hall of the LDS Panaca Stake Center Friday.

Following the “wake up noise” Saturday morning will be the 5K run at 6:30.  Contact Henry Frehner to sign up at 775-728-4575.

A community breakfast begins at 7:30 on the front lawn of the church $5 for adults, children 12 and under, $4.

Games and races for the kids will take place from 10 – Noon on the west lawn of the church.   A home run derby takes place at Pioneer Park from Noon to 2 pm.

He also thought possibly the Heritage Center, next to the Post Office, might be open with some displays during the afternoon.

The annual parade starts at 4 pm, coming down Main Street from 5th Street heading west and turn north on 2nd Street.

The dinner to conclude the celebration will be held in the church cultural hall from 5 - 7 pm. BBQ beef, potato salad, fruit cup, baked beans, cake, and roll.  Adults $7, and children 12 and under $5.
