Cow Killed - Butchered

Lincoln County Sheriff Deputy Evan Schimbeck, who also serves as the liaison to the Bureau of Land Management on Public Lands, reported a cow was shot and butchered February 28 in the Kane Springs area.

Rancher Toby Rollins has grazing allotments in the area and he reported to the Sheriff’s office one of his cows had been shot and butchered. Schimbeck said he and Rollins reviewed the scene and found “several shell casings, some pretty good footprints, and tire tracks. We were able to gather up some pretty good evidence,” he said.

There are no suspects at this time, Schimbeck noted. He said the person or persons who did the butchering only took the hind quarters, leaving the rib cage and the head. But it was not well done. “It was a pretty crude butchering job,” he said.

Members of the Lincoln County Road Department working in the area March 1, are credited with noticing the drag marks where the cow was taken from where it had been shot to a spot off the road and butchered. “They actually shot it in the roadway, and then dragged it off the roadway,” Schimbeck said.  He thinks the killing occurred Sunday night.

He said the Sheriff’s office effort to help ranches also relies on what might be observed by private citizens. “We want to ask the people of Lincoln County if they have any information to contact the Sheriff’s Department.  He reminded people to be alert to things that might be suspicious when they are traveling around the county. “These ranchers depend on this for their livelihood, and it could be a big loss for the small rancher to lose one or two cows.”
