Lincoln Girls Lose to Battle Mountain

By Dave Maxwell

Battle Mountain used a 12-4 fourth quarter run to pull away and down Lincoln County 50-43 in a 2A girls state semifinal game at the Lawlor Events Center Friday.

The Lynx did manage to pull within 37-35 with 5:21 remaining on a three-point play by Marissa Smerek, but that was a close as they could get.

Jordan Waugh led the Longhorns (18-7) with 20 points and seven rebounds, and teammate Alexis Johnson added 14 points.

Smerek was team high for Lincoln with 16 points. Melanie Florence added 11.

Lincoln County (21-8) fell one short of getting to the state title game for the third year in a row. “They just outplayed us,” said Lincoln Coach Henry Frehner. “They outworked us. They were more ready than we were.”

Lincoln was having a lot of trouble hitting from the outside or getting the ball to the inside for the high percentage shot. “It’s that we settled for the outside shot, rather than try to force it inside,” he said.  “We told them to go inside, but they relied on that three point shot a little too much.” And this game, it wasn’t falling.

The Longhorns went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Lynx 18-6 for a 28-21 halftime lead. “We were fighting from a hole the rest of the game, and it just wore us out and we ran out of time,” said Frehner.

Battle Mountain went on to gain their first state title since 2000 by beating Pershing County 52-49 the next night.
