Panther Girls Fall to McDermitt

It was the year for the Northern teams to dominate at the 1A Girls State championships this year in Reno. Both Pahranagat Valley and Lake Mead lost in the semifinals in Reno on Friday.
McDermitt opened up a 24-11 led on the Panthers, the defending champions, and never looked back in their semifinal matchup. Freshman point guard Debra McKee scored 13 points and Kayla Bland had 10 in a 41-30 win over Pahranagat Valley.
The two Bulldog guards did most of their work from the perimeter, taking advantage of openings created by 6-5 center Becky Kershner.
McDermitt used first half runs of 14-2 and 10-0 for the 24-11 halftime lead and the Panthers (20-10) never got closer than 10 in the second half.
Halie Lewis and Addie Canning each hit 3-pointers to get PVHS within 14-11 at one point early on, but a three-point play by Kershner started a 10-0 Bulldog run that gave them control of the game thereafter.
Nikki Schofield was the scoring leader for the Panthers with nine points.
The No. 2 Southern League representative, Lake Mead, lost to eventual state champion Virginia City 49-36 in the other semifinal game.

McDERMITT: Wilkinson 4, Bland 10, Kershner 8, Tom 4, Rodriguez 2, McKee 13. Totals 16 7-13 41.
PAHRANAGAT: Higbee 5, Lewis 7, Schofield 9, Canning 3, Day 6. Totals 10 7-15 30.
