02-04-2010 NIAA Emergency Realignment for 2010-2012 Proposed

NIAA Emergency Realignment for 2010-2012 Proposed

By Dave Maxwell

The Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association has proposed a realignment of leagues and teams for a two-year period beginning in the fall of 2010.

Following through on the recommendations of committee members from all around the state and school populations, Executive Director Eddie Bonine proposed realignments in all four of the state's athletic classifications.

Of particular interest to Lincoln County is the aligning of both Lincoln County High School and Pahranagat Valley High School into the same league for regular season play in all sports except football. However, at playoff time, 2A and 1A schools would break off for separate playoffs, regional, and state tournaments.

Currently Class 2A Southern League members Agassi Prep, Calvary Chapel, Lincoln County and The Meadows would be in League A along with current 1A Southern League schools Henderson International, Pahranagat Valley, Sandy Valley and Springs Mountain.

League B (and the league names may be changed later), would comprise current 2A league members Needles and Mountain View, along with 1A schools Beatty, Indian Springs, Lake Mead and Trinity. Current independents Adelson and Laughlin also would play in League B.

The league alignments would have the most affect on the regular season, as schools would retain the 1A and 2A enrollment-based alignments for the postseason.

Damon Seiters, Sports Editor for the Review-Journal, wrote in a recent article the purpose of the realignment is to reduce travel, decreasing travel expenses and missed class time by students and teachers. In Seiter's article, he notes according to the NIAA, the 14 Southern 1A and 2A schools that are current members of a league would combine to save 6,808 miles in travel for league contests per sports season.

Lund, Round Mountain, and Tonopah, all current members of the 1A South, would shift to the 1A North. White Pine would move into the Northern Nevada Ruby Mountain League for all sports except football, where it would remain in the Southern League B. West Wendover would also move into the Ruby Mountain League.

NIAA Assistant Director Donnie Nelson said the proposal would first be considered by the state's superintendents in a meeting next month.  It would then be voted on by the NIAA Board of Control at its March meeting, either in Winnemucca or Reno.
